Description:

Cefotaxime is a bactericidal drug, which inhibits the bacterial wall synthesis of the actively dividing cells by binding to one or more penicillin-binding proteins. Sulbactam is a semisynthetic -lactam sulphone, which inhibits -lactamases of the Richmond types II, III, IV and V (plasmid or chromosomally mediated). This inhibition is reported to be both reversible and irreversible. It acts as a suicide inhibitor by forming a reversible inactive enzyme-sulbactam complex. This reversible acyl-intermediate may then revert to a more stable complex, which irreversibly inhibits the -lactamase. Sulbactam is able to protect the activity of various -lactam antibiotics by rendering -lactamases inactive

Indication and Usage:

Cefotaxime for Injection, is indicated for the treatment of  infections caused by susceptible strains of the designated microorganisms in the diseases listed below:

1) Lower respiratory tract infections, including pneumonia
2) Genitourinary infections. Urinary tract infections
3) Gynecologic infections, including pelvic inflammatory disease, endometritis and pelvic cellulitis
4) Bacteremia/Septicemia
5) Skin and skin structure infections
6) Intra-abdominal infections including peritonitis
7) Bone and/or joint infections
8) Central nervous system infections, e.g., meningitis and ventriculitis
